Hey there, I’m Mel, your friendly neighbourhood beagle enthusiast and professional dog sitter. If you’re reading this, chances are you own a beagle and are looking for a Gold Coast based dog sitter. Well, I’m here to share some insights into why beagles are a breed apart when it comes to dog sitting and why my 15+ years of experience make me your go-to beagle sitter, especially here on the Gold Coast.

My Beagle Zara

Beagles are more than just adorable faces with floppy ears; they come with a unique set of quirks and needs that set them apart from other breeds. Their obsession with food is legendary, and if you’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing your life with one, you know that keeping them away from the pantry is a daily challenge.

In this article, I’ll delve into the world of beagle sitting, exploring the tricks of the trade when it comes to managing their insatiable appetite. I’ll also share some personal experiences from my own beagle journey, including the lessons I learned from my dear beagle companion who, sadly, passed away this year (2023)

Understanding Beagles

Beagles are a breed with a distinct personality and a set of characteristics that make them unique and sometimes challenging to care for. Here’s a closer look at what you need to know about these adorable hounds:

  • Food Obsession: Beagles are notorious for their obsession with food. It’s not just that they love to eat; it’s as if they have a radar for any edible item within a mile radius.
  • Exceptional Sense of Smell: Beagles boast one of the most powerful noses in the canine kingdom. Their scenting abilities are top-notch, making them skilled hunters, but it also means they can sniff out a hidden snack with ease.
  • Curiosity Unleashed: Beagles are naturally curious creatures. They want to explore everything in their environment, which includes your kitchen counters, trash cans, and even that mysterious closet where you keep the treats.
  • Playful and Energetic: These dogs have boundless energy and love to play. A bored beagle can quickly become a mischievous beagle, so keeping them mentally and physically stimulated is crucial.
  • Friendly and Social: Beagles are known for their friendly and sociable nature. They tend to get along well with people and other dogs, making them excellent family pets.
  • Vocal Communicators: Beagles have a distinctive bark, often described as musical or melodious. They use their voices to communicate, whether it’s to alert you to something interesting or just to let you know they’re there.
  • Stubborn Streak: While beagles are intelligent, they also have a stubborn streak. They can be a bit challenging to train, especially if they catch a whiff of something more exciting than your commands.

Food Management

Beagles’ unyielding love for food is something that defines them, and as a beagle dog sitter, it’s a characteristic I’ve become intimately familiar with over my 15+ years of experience. Here’s a closer look at how to manage the food frenzy when caring for these delightful hounds:

  • Secure Storage is a Must: Beagles have an uncanny ability to detect and access food, even when it seems well out of their reach. That means a sturdy, secure storage solutions for all edibles.
  • Close Those Cupboards: Beagle owners become experts in cupboard management. You’ll quickly learn to close those cupboard doors tightly, as a curious beagle can figure out how to paw them open with surprising ease. For me this is now second nature including keeping food away from the edge of the bench and table.
  • Rubbish Bin Tactics: Beagles are resourceful, and they’ll make a beeline for the trash can if they suspect any food scraps are inside. As such my bin is built into the cupboard minimising any unexpected visits.
  • Scheduled Feeding Times: It’s essential to establish a routine when it comes to feeding. Regular mealtimes help manage their expectations, and they’re less likely to go on a scavenger hunt if they know when to expect their next meal.
  • Use Treats Wisely: Beagles are eager to please and will do just about anything for a treat. However, I use treats sparingly or advised by my customer.
  • Training is Key: Proper training is essential for managing a beagle’s food fixation. Teaching commands like “leave it” and “stay” can be a lifesaver when your pet friend’s nose detects something delicious.
  • Food Puzzle Toys: Beagles love a challenge, and food puzzle toys can provide mental stimulation while slowing down their eating. These toys make your beagle work for their food, which can be both entertaining and satisfying for them.
  • Monitor Their Diet: Keep a close eye on what your beagle eats, both at mealtime and during unsupervised moments. Beagles have a knack for finding food where you least expect it.

My Personal Journey with Beagles

Allow me to take a moment to share a glimpse into my own beagle journey, one that spans over 15 years and has shaped me into the beagle dog sitter I am today. My connection with these wonderful dogs runs deep, and it’s a bond I cherish.

My Beagle Zara Camping

It all began with my own beagle companion, a charming and mischievous pup that entered my life over a decade ago. Her name was Zara, and she was the epitome of beagle exuberance. Zara brought boundless joy and adventure into my life. From the daily morning walks filled with curious sniffs to the never-ending games of fetch, my time with her was a constant whirlwind of fun and love.

But, as any beagle owner knows, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Zara had a talent for getting into places she shouldn’t and for disappearing when you least expected it. Her escapades kept me on my toes, but they also taught me valuable lessons in patience and problem-solving.

Oh, the food! Zara had an insatiable appetite, and I became an expert at food management. I learned to double-check the pantry doors and keep a watchful eye on the kitchen counters. Zara boundless enthusiasm for food was endearing, even if it led to a few comical kitchen capers.

Zara eventually crossed the rainbow bridge, leaving a void in my heart that can never be filled. Her passing was a reminder of the profound connection that can exist between a human and a beagle, and it deepened my commitment to understanding and caring for these amazing dogs. My time with Zara left me with a treasure trove of experiences and insights. I learned the importance of patience, consistent training, and the significance of meeting a beagle’s mental and physical needs.

The Importance of a Secure Yard

When it comes to beagle dog sitting, one aspect that cannot be overlooked is the necessity of a secure yard. Beagles are known for their innate curiosity and adventurous spirit, and as a seasoned beagle sitter with over 15 years of experience, I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to ensure your furry friend has a safe and secure outdoor space to explore. Here’s why a secure yard is of paramount importance:

  • Houdini Hounds: Beagles are natural escape artists. They have an uncanny ability to find weaknesses in fences or dig their way to freedom. Without proper containment, your beagle may embark on unauthorized adventures, which can pose risks to their safety.
  • The Call of the Scent: Beagles have an exceptional sense of smell, and once they catch a whiff of an interesting scent, they’re compelled to follow it. A secure yard not only keeps your beagle safe but also prevents it from wandering off in pursuit of enticing odors.
  • Play and Exercise: Beagles are energetic dogs that thrive on physical activity. A securely fenced yard provides them with a space to run, play, and burn off that boundless energy, ensuring they stay happy and healthy.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing that your beagle is contained within a secure yard offers peace of mind. You can relax without the constant worry of your furry friend slipping away or getting into mischief beyond the confines of your property.
  • Preventing Accidents: In an unsecured environment, beagles may encounter hazards like traffic, wildlife, or toxic plants. A secure yard minimises the risk of accidents and keeps your dog out of harm’s way.
  • Training and Bonding: Training your beagle in a secure yard is more effective and safer. It allows for off-leash training and bonding time, which can strengthen your relationship and improve obedience.
  • Respecting Local Regulations: Many areas, including the Gold Coast, have regulations regarding dog ownership and containment. Maintaining a secure yard ensures you’re in compliance with local laws, avoiding potential fines or issues with authorities.
  • Customisation: A secure yard can be tailored to your beagle’s specific needs. You can create a play area, install obstacles for mental stimulation, or add shady spots for relaxation—all while ensuring your dog’s safety.
